Program Strengths

Individualized Training

All residents are given a broad base of training, allowing them to practice in any setting. However, residents are also able to tailor their training given 6 months of electives and our unopposed program status. Our program continues to grow and change in response to the needs of our residents and our community.

Behavioral Health

Our residents incorporate the care of psychiatric illnesses into their daily work for patient of all ages. Dr. Julie Rickert, the Director of Behavioral Health and a nationally renowned behavioral health educator, is the chair of the Forum for Behavioral Science in Family Medicine. She has a dedicated curriculum for first year residents which includes communication skills, dealing with challenges in patient care, and agenda setting. She leads monthly sessions on behavioral health topics with all residents each month. She is integrated into our clinic and often precepts in clinic. We have additional support from outside adult and pediatric psychiatrists in the community.

Leadership

Residents participate in team meetings with clinic faculty and staff. Residents are an active part of learning and developing clinic policies and policies. Residents progress in responsibility over the 3 years – increasing patient care and supervision of medical students and junior residents. They are encouraged to sit on committees in the program, hospital, region, and beyond.

Addiction Medicine

Patients with addiction are often best cared for in a continued relationship with their provider. So, in our clinic, patients with substance use disorders are a part of the residents’ patient panels as we focus on whole person care. All residents receive training in medication-assisted treatment (MAT) and treatment of opioid use disorder (OUD) with buprenorphine.  Dr. Camdin Gray has a passion for providing excellent care to patients suffering from addiction and minimizing the associated stigma.

Wellness

All residents have faculty and resident mentors. There is ongoing wellness education in the didactics and wellness activities (formal and informal). Our wellness committee has representation from each residency class along with faculty and clinical staff members. Recognizing that the work that we do has a tremendous impact on resident and staff wellbeing, we developed a practice management committee (which includes residents, faculty, and staff) to address work related contributors to wellness.

LGBTQ+ Care

Our residents have the opportunity to provide gender-affirming care within their own practice. Dr. Kevin Robertson works along side our residents while also working at the Inclusion Clinic at Froedtert Health. That clinic is dedicated to the care of the LGBTQ+ community incorporating primary care, surgery, endocrinology, and behavioral health. An elective rotation in the Inclusion clinic is available for our residents as well. Dr. Robertson also integrates care of LGBTQ+ patients into our didactics along with HIV care.

Sports Medicine

Dr. Yuka Kobayashi, team physician for multiple collegiate and professional sports teams, has driven continued improvement in this area and spearheaded our connection to Destiny High School.
